CAN YOU MIX RUSTIC AND FARMHOUSE?
3 Ways You Can Combine Farmhouse and Rustic
The terms “farmhouse” and “rustic” are often used in the same conversation because they have similar concepts. Both are characterized by the use of old wood floors or beams, family-centered decor, and vintage touches like hand-made furniture and decor. The main difference between Farmhouse and Rustic is that Farmhouse tends to be less natural. The incorporation of paint, think whitewash, or buffed/ sanded wood and metals create more of a farmhouse vibe. Rustic, on the other hand, uses wood in its natural state to create a rustic cabin-like look.
1-WOOD
A great place to start this design blending is by incorporating wood! Another interesting thing, in my observation, is both designs can successfully incorporate black. I have seen black chandeliers, industrial pipe shelf brackets, and black barn door hardware utilized throughout both rustic and farmhouse interiors. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed and welcomed challenges that lead me outside of my normal rustic décor while creating. Check out this rustic farmhouse coat rack I designed to tie into bright whites, barn doors, and black hardware. My creativity has allowed me to create tie in art. This includes statement pieces that tie in the two concepts, allowing for artistic unification.
2-FURNITURE & DECOR
Through furniture or decorative elements, you can create a beautifully designed interior that incorporates both rustic and farmhouse. Furniture should be designed in a way that is comfortable and sleek. This leaves you more opportunity to incorporate bold textures and color options with decor/ art. Coat racks, clocks, and picture frames are all items I have incorporated both concepts in. White Washed barn board, black/ white painted nuts and pinecones, mixed with natural elements create one of a kind functional décor and art. Interestingly enough, when you place a custom order for this blend, the price is the same as similar listings on my website. You can choose from a sliding scale according to the amount of detail added in an item.
3- FOCUS ON CERTAIN ELEMENTS
Now that we have established the possibility of combining these two interior themes, make yourself a list of your favorites from each. Keep in mind, bright whites are common in the farmhouse designs and in the rustic theme. Perhaps You’d like to incorporate whitewash with white birch trees. Choose your favorite concepts from both and now tie them in together. Are you fond of antlers and deer heads? Great, now put them on a white washed brick wall over a fireplace with a giant wooden beam mantle. Do you want black hardware or perhaps silver to give you that galvanized metal you find in modern farmhouse décor? If you find that the vintage concept within the farmhouse style is your thing, then I could create a silvered mirror with rustic/ farmhouse embellishments on it. Interestingly enough, we have vintage mirror glass here just waiting for you to request custom framing!
No matter how you combine these two, it’s an adventure. You really can’t go wrong here. Both of these styles are gorgeous and give a warm country feel.
Happy decorating!
